Sound of Falling

Sound of Falling, directed by Mascha Schilinski, is a haunting, century-spanning drama that interweaves the lives of four generations of young women across a single, weathered farmhouse in northern Germany. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Jury Prize, operates less as a linear narrative and more as a poetic, impressionistic tapestry of memory, trauma, and female resilience. Mascha Schilinski masterfully uses visual and sonic motifs to bind the timelines: a hole in the barn door, keyholes, flies buzzing, and a crescendoing bass drone that signals transitions between eras. These elements create a dreamlike, almost ghostly atmosphere, where the house itself becomes a living archive. The film’s central conceit is that history is not a story told, but a feeling carried - a "ghost" not of spirits, but of unresolved pain passed down through time. As critic Sheila O’Malley notes, "The ghost is history."

The four protagonists:

Alma (Hanna Heckt), in the 1910s, a child in a repressive household, spies on her brother Fritz, an amputee whose leg was removed to avoid conscription. 

Erika (Lea Drinda) in the 1940s, wartime Germany, binds her leg like her uncle’s, a gesture of identification with suffering. 

Angelika (Lena Urzendowsky) in 1980s East Germany, the GDR, is sexually objectified by her uncle and feels trapped by ideology and surveillance.

Lenka (Laeni Geiseler) in the present-day modern era still grapples with grief and identity, her world more open but emotionally suffocated by inherited silence.

Each confronts the limits of agency in their respective eras. Their stories are marked by unspoken longings, bodily autonomy denied, and the ever-present shadow of death. 

The film’s sound design is pivotal - silence, creaking floors, and sudden roars evoke psychological tension. The title, Sound of Falling, references both the literal fall from a hayloft and the philosophical question: Does a falling tree make a sound if no one hears it? Schilinski suggests that the emotional weight of the past is real, even when unacknowledged. The film’s original German title, “In Die Sonne Schauen“/“Staring at the Sun”, further underscores the theme of confronting unbearable truths.

Critics have praised the film’s formal daring, emotional depth, and feminist resonance. As The New Yorker’s Justin Chang observes, Schilinski avoids explicit depictions of violence, instead using subtlety and suggestion to convey abuse, sterilisation, and psychological trauma. The result is a film that feels both timeless and urgent - a meditation on how trauma echoes across generations, and how the body remembers what the mind cannot speak.

Sound of Falling is not a film of easy answers. It resists closure, leaving viewers with lingering unease and a profound sense of empathy for the women who lived, suffered, and disappeared—whose lives, though erased from official history, continue to reverberate in the walls of the house and in the hearts of those who come after.

Главным свойством характера моей свекрови Надежды Давыдовны Вольпиной было чувство абсолютной свободы. Она была человеком не просто независимым, а обладавшим вкусом к свободе. Только она могла воспитать такого сына — Александра Сергеевича Есенина‑Вольпина, для которого отстаивание этой безусловной ценности свободы во всех — мыслимых и немыслимых формах, стало основным делом жизни. В 16 лет Алек дал зарок — никогда и не при каких обстоятельствах не врать, даже по мелочам. И так и живет.

Ha поэта Даниила Хармса донесла гражданка Антонина Оранжереева. В 1942 году он был помещён в психиатрическую больницу «Кресты». Найдена справка в архивах КГБ, что Хармс умер не от голода — его расстреляли. 

Поэта Николая Заболоцкого посадили за то, что он рыл подземный ход до Бомбея. И он подписал, что рыл. Все бы подписали. 

Академику Козыреву дали десять лет за попытку угнать реку Волгу. В обвинении так и было написано: «Пытался угнать Волгу из России на Запад». — Я уже был тогда грамотным физиком, — рассказывал он Сергею Довлатову. — Поэтому, когда сформулировали обвинение, я рассмеялся. Зато, когда объявили приговор, мне уже было не до смеха… 

В дом Бориса Пильняка постучали поздним вечером, в день рождения его сына: человек в белом торжественном костюме вежливо попросил писателя заехать на часик к Ежову – сейчас, ночью, это срочно. Жена Пильняка попыталась дать ему собранный заранее узелок с одеждой (стука в дверь ждал, практически, каждый), но он отказался поверить, что это уже всё, и не взял. Пильняк поехал к комиссару госбезопасности сам, на своей машине, и домой уже не вернулся: после работы костоломов он подписал признание, что является японским шпионом, тут же состоялся суд и в этот же день он был расстрелян. 

Следом за Пильняком была арестована его жена, актриса Кира Андроникашвили, и сослана в лагерь жён изменников Родины (АЛЖИР). 

Николая Олейникова, одного из знаменитых ОБЭРИУтов, редактора журналов «Ёж» и «Чиж», в 37-м расстреляли, как пособника троцкизму. И ещё в архивах было найдено, что он подписал признание в убийстве собственного отца – видимо, для следователя одного троцкизма было мало, хотелось чего-то ещё и для души – убийство родителя, например. 

Всеволоду Мейерхольду после всех изощрённых пыток, перед смертью, по очереди сломали все пальцы. A потом утопили в нечистотах — всё это мы узнали спустя много лет, после вскрытия архивов. Для отчётности написали, как положено: расстрелян, похоронен в общей могиле… 

Мейерхольд не подписал бумагу о троцкистском заговоре, в котором якобы участвовали Эренбург, Леонов, Пастернак, Катаев, Эйзенштейн, Шостакович и многие другие — и их не тронули. После пыток он подписал бумагу только на себя , чем страшно разозлил НКВД-шников. 

Место смерти Осипа Мандельштама — лагерный пункт Вторая речка. Так называемые «зимние трупы» складывали штабелями, а весной хоронили в братских могилах. В одной из таких безымянных могил покоится и великий русский поэт. 

Михоэлса по личному распоряжению Сталина убили на даче. А потом выкинули на дорогу, чтобы озвучить версию: «Был сбит машиной». Правда открылась только после расследования этого дела в 1953 году. 

Бабеля не расстреляли, как это принято считать, в сороковом году. Он шёл по этапу и, обессилев, упал. И его просто оставили умирать на дороге. Написано, что его похоронили в общей могиле — но вряд ли кто-то вернулся за ним, мёртвым, чтобы донести его тело до общей могилы. Великий писатель умер в сугробе, в лесу — в сороковом. 

Поэта Александра Введенского первый раз арестовали в 1931-м, второй — в 1941-м, он был этапирован в эшелоне в Казань и умер в пути от плеврита. Его тело было доставлено в морг Казанской психиатрической больницы. Где он похоронен, неизвестно… 

Погибших и пострадавших во время репрессий — миллионы. 

А вы удивляетесь свежеслепленным благодарными потомками памятникам товарищу Сталину.

My mother died in the early evening of a warm spring day.
She died in my childhood bedroom, the windows open to let in the breeze, to the sound of wood pigeons and blackbirds that had far too much to say.
It had not been a happy week.
I work as a scriptwriter and was in a Writers Room for a new Danger Mouse series, surrounded by funny people, when I got the call to come.
I made my excuses, got into my car and drove back, dreading every mile I got closer.
My father, when I arrived, had been given a job by my mother.
I wasn't allowed upstairs to see her before I had watched a small DVD they had made.

He sat me down and put it on.
It was a black and white film of my parents on their wedding day.
They looked glorious.
My mother, a natural beauty, was in a short Sixties dress knocked up by my aunt on a Singer sewing machine the day before.
My dad was in his shirt sleeves, tie still on, and they were dancing together in the back garden of a Welsh miners' terrace house.
I could see washing on a line behind them.
What struck me was how happy they looked.
It destroyed me.

My father broke the news.
This was it.
The end had come.
We had all sat in a consultant's room a year before listening to a handsome man with salt and pepper hair tell my mother her cancer had returned and this time, there was nothing to be done.
She was going to die.

Eighteen years ago this Christmas, my first child of three, my daughter was very ill and she died early in the New Year. It was a meteorite falling on a family that was already rocked by loss and absence. Since then, our family has been cruelly pared back to one, myself, the mother, living alone at home.

At night I sleep to the rattles of an empty house. Even the wind has a faraway cry when it rattles at the window. My three children, my daughter and two sons died from Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease of the lungs. They lived a full and spirited life together, their illness did not define them. They were witty, intelligent, and gifted with homegrown talents that filled this home with music and liveliness. They expressed their true selves to their world of friends, and gave of themselves freely and honestly.

Losing a child is like having your heart torn out and your stomach emptied. Grief gets in the way of daylight, not to mention the nocturnal dark.

Christmas is a black surround, without tinsel, while the masses are plumping up the shopping streets.

But grief can be another day on the wheel, when paradoxically a blue sky can unveil and a white egret appears in the branch. I have named him Doy after my youngest son, whose pet name was Doy. He will fly and land with me as I walk beside the river in the valley behind our home.
